Think you know hip-hop & RnB ?
It's come along way since its peak in the 90's ... some say its lost its soul, others say its merely developed
Lets take a look at some of the less well known singer-songwriters, who keep the true essence of the genre alive.
1 - Lyfe Jennings
A beautiful singer, amazing voice - he sings about the grimiest street escapades, prison life, but with the voice of an angel. his gritty and raspy vocals are so underrated, to me it's just a complete tragedy that this guy receives litteraly no recognition in the UK.
2 - Jazmine Sullivan

2 - Jazmine Sullivan
Think of a troubled woman with a broken heart, literally singing the pain away in the style of Mary J. and Keyshia Cole. Her music is a paradox, it is far from corny but you literally can't help but sing along. Her Recent hit 'circles' samples the Mobb Deep hip-hop classic 'Shook Ones' perfectly.
3 - Marsha Ambrosius
Formerly of British Neo-Soul duo Floetry, her beautiful falsetto voice cannot fail to capture the listener. Her lyrics are self written, well thought out, poetic and gracefully caress the track, in a world of emotion laced with vulnerability. She is a great artist
4 - Melanie Fiona
Despite being signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation, she has little exposure in comparison to the likes of Rihanna and other fellow label mates. Her music has a nostalgic sentiment to it, in the vein of Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele. Her music style is a blend of Jazz, R&B, soul. Her music is punchy, ballsy, addictive and always brilliantly produced with live percussion.
5 - Dionne Bromfield
Being Amy Winehouse's God - daughter, you can clearly hear the influence in her sound. Less of a walking disaster, with an equal amount of talent, there is no doubt that the girl is destined for success and is definately one to watch.

6 - Solange Knowles
Yes, you have probably heard of her, if not for her music, for her 'Knowles blood relation'. Solange is a great talent, her latest album Solange and the Hadley Street Dreams clearly Mo-Town inspired, resembling 60's girl groups such as the Velvettes, unfortunately fades into the shadows of her Superstar sister. It's not that Solanges music is similar or even of worse quality, but the inevitable comparisons between her and Beyonce, the walking hit machine, have unfortunately have hindered her artistic career. P.S I love her fashion sense too !
7 - Leela James
Amazing soul singer with amazing voice. Funky house fans may know her from Quentin Harris version of her 'break-up track' My Joy. I can't decide which one I like more.

I hope he gets his break soon! Most of his exposure is as a modern artist utilizing the power of You-Tube, the singer songwriter and fashion forward heartthrob has a great image, great music and watchable on screen presence - I don't know why he's not already a chart topper in the height of UK buzz, but I have every faith that it could be his time any moment now.

9 - Teena Marie
RIP to an incredible woman who by some was considered a Legend, but to many was unknown. The first white female to ever sign to MoTown was generally most succesful within the African American Market and described by Rick James as '' ''. A true artist who wrote, produced and recorder her own material aswell as being a master of the guitar, piano and congas the ''Ivory Queen of Soul'' was a master of some of my favourite music and although being adored by the fans that do know of her, I believe she was deserving of more exposure.

10 - Genesis Elijah
Political, sometimes controversial but you can tell his music is his passion which is probably the reason why u will never find him on your Top40. Not a rapper you can imagine on MTVBase with a bunch of half naked girls, but one that is a fan of Hip-Hop as much as he is a participant. To me he embodies the spirit of a 'hustler'.
